Biodynamic Wines & Vineyard

" Because the future wines still have a past " is the motto of Gaillac wines , one of the oldest vineyards in France, and this could also be the motto of Castle Mayragues with its conversion to biodynamics in 1999

the domain

Castle Mayragues, surrounded by vineyards, in the middle of a hilly and wooded landscape, is situated on the slopes of the right bank of the Tarn near the forest of Grésigne. It is 10 kms north of Gaillac, 25 kms west of Albi and 60 km northeast of Toulouse. The walled town of Castelnau de Montmiral is 5 kms.

In 1609, the estate was divided between vines, meadows and woods as evidenced by the archives. So we can say that we cultivate the vine Mayragues for at least 400 years. The discovery of fragments of Roman pottery and other remains suggesting the possibility of the presence of the vine Mayragues since Roman times, when the Romans established the vineyards of Gaillac.

The terroir

Very largely dominated soil carbonates / limestone (the formwork land) with more clay areas (marl) and a former zone of colluvial likely associated with a former river leading to a small valley to the west. Systemic exposure of the vineyards gives to the southwest.

the climate

The climate in Gaillac, although continental, has influences from the Atlantic Ocean (wet sweetness) and the Mediterranean (dry heat). Mayragues enjoys a microclimate, bénificiant some cool summer nights, due to the proximity of Grésigne forest.

The grapes from Gaillac

Gaillac is fortunate to have a number of specific grape varieties in the region, established by monks since ancient times for their suitability for the terroir and climate. These varieties give an original and unique character to the wines, and this character is further enhanced by the methods of cultivation and vinification of biodynamics we use to Mayragues.
